Sits Alone Ravenscraig Castle 14th-century
Ravenscraig Castle sits in splendid isolation on the banks of the river Ugie, near Peterhead, Aberdeenshire
The ruins are a few miles upstream of Peterhead.
Ravenscraig Castle, also known as the Craig of Inverugie, is a ruined 15th-century
The castle was build in May 1491, on the banks of the Ugie and defended by a moat.
The castle was the seat of the Cheyne family, and passed to the Keiths in the mid 14th century.
Last time use in 18th century.
Ravenscraig Castle is a ruined L-plan tower house with an irregularly shaped courtyard sat on a rock above the River Ugie, all surrounded by ditch.
The castle does not follow the usual layout of the 16th century with a stair in the wing, but instead consists of three vaulted basement rooms, one of which is supplied with a narrow stair rising to the first floor on the north riverside of the largest vault, which is also the one room provided with a doorway, which is arched and opens out onto the courtyard.
Most of the castle’s decorative features and dressed stone have been robbed.
The ruin is fenced off and surrounded by woodlands, but accessible via a rough footpath.
