Aberdeenshire Council launch consultation on proposed changes to taxi charges

North-east residents are being encouraged to participate in a consultation on proposed new taxi charges.

Local authorities are required by law to review the charging scale and Aberdeenshire Council has consulted with the trade and developed a new scale for the public’s consideration.

The Aberdeenshire Council launch consultation on proposed changes to taxi charges is now live until October 4, 2024 and can be accessed at

Among the proposed new charges, which would come into effect on December 1, 2024 are the following:

Each additional 1/11^th part of a mile or part thereof	£0.22	£0.22	£0.33
Waiting time per 10 seconds	£0.11	£0.11	£0.11

Standard Rate

Applies at all times out with the Late Night and Festive Season Rates which are detailed below.

Late Night Rate

Applies (a) Mondays to Thursdays from 10pm to 6am the following day; (b) Weekends from 6pm on Friday to 6am on Monday; and (c) Public Holidays from 6am to 10pm these being the 3rd of January, Good Friday and May Day.

Festive Season Rate

Applies (a) between 6pm on the 24th of December until 6am on the 27th of December; (b) between 6pm on the 31st of December until 6am on the 3rd of January; and (c) Weekends in December from 6pm on the Friday until 6am on the Sunday.

Multiple passenger surcharge

In vehicles so licensed carrying more than four passengers, a surcharge of 50% of the above fares may be charged.

Booking Fee

£0.50

Airport booking fee

Taxi drivers may add any current charge incurred at airports when either dropping off or picking up passengers. Drivers must make passengers aware in advance that extra charges may be added to the fare. Booking fees are to be shown on the meter.

Unacceptable mess

Passengers are carried on the understanding that the driver may charge a passenger, creating an unacceptable mess in the taxi, a maximum of £100.

The brave men and women who kept our island nation afloat during both World Wars have been remembered with the raising of the Red Ensign in Fraserburgh.

Aberdeenshire Council was honoured to raise the Red Ensign – affectionately known as the ‘Red Duster’ – at Fraserburgh’s Saltoun Square on Tuesday, September 3.

Merchant Navy Day is celebrated in September and also provides an opportunity to celebrate our dependence on modern day merchant seafarers who are responsible for 95% of the UK’s imports, including half the food we eat, plenty of the fuel we burn and virtually all the products and goods we take for granted.

Attending the poignant event were Fraserburgh and District councillors together with representatives from Fraserburgh’s Lifeboat, Mission, Sea Cadets, Harbour Commissioners, fishing organisations and The Salvation Army.

Gabriel Watt of Fraserburgh RBL Pipe Band played ahead of the flag raising while Sarah-Jane Urmston of the Salvation Army performed the Last Post.

Chair of the Banff and Buchan Area Committee, Cllr Doreen Mair, addressed those present before Councillor James Adams raised the flag.

Cllr Mair said: “In Fraserburgh, the importance of the sea to our community and the safety of those who sail on it is very much to the forefront of our thoughts and deeply embedded in our day to day lives. Merchant Navy Day was established to remember those who kept our nation afloat during two world wars ensuring that we had the supplies we needed to keep going.

“This corner of the coast was known as hellfire corner during the war because of the danger posed to merchant shipping from the Luftwaffe so remembering those brave seaman in the Broch is even more poignant and important as many came from this area.

“Too often they are the forgotten or invisible service. By raising the Red Ensign today we will ensure that at least – on this and the following days – they are remembered and saluted. This simple act will mean so much to the families of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, to those who have retired after a lifetime of service and to those who still go to sea now and face all its many perils.”

Police have closed industrial estate, Police and bomb disposal experts were called to Dales Industrial Estate

Residents reported on the page that part of South road was closed, road A982 from Meethill Junction to Invernettie roundabout.

Police were called to Dales Industrial Estate after a unexploded ordnance device was discovered.

An industrial estate in Aberdeenshire has been locked down after a potentially explosive device was discovered.

A cordon has been placed around the scene and residents are being told to avoid the area.

Police and bomb disposal experts were called to Dales Industrial Estate, in Peterhead, at around 3.30pm on Friday after the discovery of unexploded ordnance.

A cordon has been erected around the area while EOD teams deal with the device.

Repair works Scotstown Beach Car Park, Access Road – 19^th August 2024

Financial support from the Crown Estate’s Coastal Communities Fund is making it possible for Aberdeenshire Council to carry out repairs to the unadopted section of the access road to this important facility on Buchan’s spectacular east coast.

Scotstown Beach is a much-loved stretch of Aberdeenshire’s Coastal route and popular with local families, dog walkers and visitors from further afield.

These repair works are the next part of improving the overall visitor experience to Scotstown Beach following the upgrade works undertaken to this countryside car park earlier this year. This will significantly improve access to this coastal asset while still being in keeping with the site’s natural characteristics and topography.

Work is due to begin on Monday 19^th August and take five days to complete. During this period the road and car park will be inaccessible and closed to the public (https://online.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/Apps/roadworks/pdf/BU6279.pdf).

This year, nominations to join an Aberdeenshire community council open on Monday, August 19, and will close on Sunday, September 8

Aberdeenshire’s network of around 70 community councils will be seeking interest from potential new members over the next few weeks as the area moves to a single election date for the first time.

Previously, community councils sought to fill vacancies on various dates throughout the year. From this year onwards, the nomination period will be the same for all groups in the area.

This year, nominations to join an Aberdeenshire community council open on Monday, August 19, and will close on Sunday, September 8.

Community councils are voluntary groups made up of people who care about their community and want to make them a better place to live.

Leader of Aberdeenshire Council Cllr Gillian Owen said: “Community councils provide an important voice for residents across Aberdeenshire and have been responsible for some fantastic activities and projects that have made a real difference locally.

“While in many cases previous members will want to continue representing their communities, it’s also important to attract new members to keep groups sustainable and bring new ideas to the table, and I would encourage anybody who would like to be involved to complete a nomination form.”

Deputy Leader Cllr Anne Stirling said: “Aberdeenshire Council benefits from a very close relationship with the community council network and together we can help achieve successes at a very local level.

“That’s why it’s important to ensure there are enough candidates to allow each community council to form, otherwise this could leave considerable gaps in the representation of local views and involvement in council activities. By offering just a few hours a month, a great deal can be achieved.”

Duties of community councils can include carrying out local projects, preparing community newsletters, responding to council consultations, campaigning on local issues, and organising community events.

Community councillors will be provided with training and ongoing support from Aberdeenshire Council.

Peterhead man, 25-year-old arrested and charged

A 25-year-old Peterhead man has been arrested and charged in connection with a wilful fire-raising at a property in Kirk Street

A 25-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a wilful fire-raising which occurred at a property in Kirk Street, Peterhead on Sunday, 7 July, 2024.

He is due to appear before Peterhead Sheriff Court on Monday, 12 August, 2024.

Detective Sergeant Richard Cooper said: “I would like to thank the public with their assistance following our appeal for information regarding this wilful fire-raising.”

Peterhead RNLI respond to Mayday call

Peterhead RNLI respond to Mayday call 8.08

On Thursday 8 August at 1.46pm, Peterhead RNLI volunteer crew were tasked to a Mayday call following a 999 call reporting a capsized vessel.

At 1:46pm on Thursday 8 August, HM Coastguard tasked Peterhead RNLI all-weather lifeboat The Misses Robertson of Kintail following a 999 call from a concerned member of the public. The call reported that a sailing vessel had capsized in Peterhead bay with 2 people onboard thrown into the water.

HM Coastguard issued a Mayday call and the volunteer lifeboat crew were paged for an immediate launch. The Peterhead RNLI all-weather lifeboat The Missed Robertson of Kintail launched on service at 1:55pm.

A search was conducted of the bay area, but the casualty vessel was not located. The lifeboat then headed to Peterhead marina and launched its daughter craft the Y boat to further the search. The crew attended the beach and along with HM Coastguard coastal rescue team located the two casualties who had been in the water and had been recovered by the local sailing club safety boat.

The crew from the Y boat undertook a head injury assessment on one of the casualties who had hit their head during the capsize. Both were left in the care of the sailing club and the lifeboat was shortly stood down, returning to the berth and made ready for next service.

Peterhead RNLI Coxswain Kyle Murray said: ‘This was my first shout as Peterhead’s full time Coxswain/Mechanic and I would like to thank all the crew for their prompt response, especially as it’s in the school holidays.

‘The volunteers at the station whether crew, fundraisers or operations team all give up their time to keep the lifeboat on service and we are only able to do this due to donations and legacies left to the RNLI by generous members of the public whose support allows us to maintain this lifesaving service.

‘Thankfully on this occasion no one was seriously injured and it was a relatively short shout. It’s been a great few weeks for me starting at Peterhead and I’m looking forward to many more shouts with this excellent team!’
