The Most Ancient Ruins of Scotland

Ancient Ruins Scottish

The Den of Boddam, near Boddam, Aberdeenshire. Perhaps the most ancient ruins!

This is a photo of the Den of Boddam, near Boddam, Aberdeenshire, and the remains of a Prehistoric flint mines complex.

Not much to look at you think, but 3000 to 4000 years ago this place was a major industrial complex, which allowed our ancestors to mine flint and turn it into all kinds of tools and weapons, which they could then trade with other tribes for goods they wanted.

Should you get the chance to visit the National Museum of Scotland, they have magnificent displays of tools and artefacts that have been found here.

For anyone who wants to visit the site, there is now a small car park and picnic tables at the side of the dam.

How to find – Ancient Ruins:

If you’re coming from Peterhead, turn of the main road at Stirling Village (just past the Rocksley Inn on the right) drive right up to the top of the hill, past all the houses until the road takes a sharp turn right.

You can park on the verge there, there’s a metal signpost that directs you to the Den.
