Friends of the Earth Scotland are hosting a special cinema screening in Peterhead of beyond Oil and Gas.
Film double bill wants to show that the future beyond oil and gas is ‘not f**ked’
Climate campaigners are hosting a special cinema screening in Peterhead of two films focusing on the impacts on people of the transition away from oil and gas.
🍿 Free popcorn will be provided for the first 30 attendees 🍿
There will be a short discussion afterwards about the ideas raised in the two 20 minute films and how they relate to people’s own experiences living in a region dominated by the oil and gas industry.
Friends of the Earth Scotland’s Climate Campaigner Alex Lee said:
“The films tell the stories of oil workers and people who have lived around the fossil fuel industry so they should have real resonance for people in Peterhead.
“We’re excited to hear from people and are hoping the films will help explore some crucial issues that are already impacting on the North East of Scotland.
“The people most affected by the transition away from fossil fuels must be at the heart of its planning to ensure that it meets their needs and protects jobs and communities, as well as delivering the necessary climate action.”
“We’re bringing the films and providing free popcorn and are really looking forward to a great turnout and great conversations with people”
Details of the films – Beyond Oil and Gas – What does it mean for Peterhead?
‘Offshore’ is a short documentary that brings hears from people working in offshore oil and gas and renewable energy – and explores what the coming energy transition means for these workers and communities around the UK North Sea.
‘The Future Is Not F**ked’ is a documentary made in Aberdeen in late 2021, with local performers asked ‘how do we let go of the world of oil and all it represents?’.
Through an infusion of live performance, interviews and cityscape, this film attempts to tell some of those stories showing how oil seeps deep into the lives, aspirations and personal relationships of people living and working in and around Aberdeen.

The special event takes place in Peterhead because of the proposal to build an additional new gas-fired power plant at the site of the existing station. Climate campaigners have highlighted how this will lock in the production and burning of fossil fuels for decades to come, despite the clear warnings that this must be rapidly phased out to halt further climate breakdown.
