New Peterhead Substation 400kV
The North East transmission network has triggered the need for a new Peterhead substation, 400kV.
Peterhead Substation UPDATE: from SSEN Community Liaison Manager
The delivery of 2 Super Grid Transformers (SGT’s) were successfully delivered to Peterhead as part of the 400kV Substation project over the last few weeks. The two SGT’s (weighing 200 tonnes each) were delivered to Peterhead site via a 14 axle trailer and AUX to AVR Cable installation and switch gear installation is ongoing.
Significant progress has been made at Peterhead over the last few months with the installation of the Gas insulated Switchgear (GIS) building, two weather protection buildings and bunds with reinforced plinths for both SGT’s, upgrades to the A90 junction and the erection of two new steel lattice 400kV overhead line towers which will connect into the new 400kV Peterhead Substation.
The coming months will see HITACHI on site for the installation of GIS and Gas Insulated Busbar (GIB) plant, new 275kV cable route from the new 400kV substation to the existing 275kV Peterhead substation. Our SGT supplier General Electric will have complete the installation, and commissioned both SGT’s and all Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) equipment will be installed.

Balfour Beatty is to develop a 400Kv Substation near the existing Peterhead 275KV substation.
The substation will be developed to operate at 400Kv.
Balfour Beatty has been awarded a £47.5 million contract to design and build a new 400 kilovolt (kV) substation in Peterhead on behalf of SSEN Transmission.
Balfour Beatty will now commence the construction of the large 25,625 square metre substation as well as all associated cabling and overhead line works, to ensure the continued safe supply of power to the North East of Scotland.
However, there will be electrical interconnectivity to the existing 275Kv substation via two new super grid transformers (SGT) The full scope of the project is to design and implement a 400/275Kv substation, including a fourteen bay 400GIS busbar. Install 2 no.
SGTs with weather enclosures. 2 no substation HV cable circuits to connect to the existing Peterhead substation 275KV AIS bays currently occupied by two overhead lines VH and VX1.
1 no Substation control building and associated infrastructure. Exploration of an alternative, approved Technologies that reduce and /or elimate the use of Sulphur Hexa-Fluride (SF6) within the GIS and /or GIB
Because of the network analysis and with a rise in contracted generation within the North East Area, there is an increased requirement for SHET to reinforce the network at Peterhead through the provision of a 275/400kV Electricity substation.
