Peterhead RNLI lifeboat was launched at 5.10pm on Friday 18 April 2025, following a request from HM Coastguard to assess the situation of a casualty vessel which had experienced engine failure approximately 1.5 nautical miles abeam of Collieston.

By the time the charity’s lifeboat arrived on scene, the vessel had managed to restart her engine and was being escorted by a local vessel. Aberdeen Coastguard requested that the Peterhead RNLI charity lifeboat accompany the vessel back to harbour and provide assistance if required.

Approximately 35 minutes into the escort, the skipper of the casualty vessel reported rising engine temperatures and it was deemed necessary to shut down the engine once again. The coxswain of the Peterhead RNLI lifeboat assessed the situation and made the decision that undertaking a tow was necessary and the safest way to assist the casualty vessel.

The volunteer crew established the tow, and the casualty vessel was safely brought into Peterhead marina.

Once in the harbour, the casualty vessel was able to regain power and berth safely without further assistance. Peterhead RNLI lifeboat was then returned to station and made ready for service again. Mike Dyke, Peterhead RNLI Duty Coxswain says: ‘Engine problems at sea can escalate quickly, it is always best to call for help early. We are glad we were able to assist and ensure a safe outcome’
