Incredible Moon Halo above the Aberdeenshire 04.03

Last night Captured The ring around the Moon, Incredible Moon Halo or Lunar Halo by Residents of Aberdeenshire and Peterhead.

What Is A Moon Halo?

The ring around the Moon – or ‘lunar halo’ is caused by the refraction of moonlight from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere.

Cirrus clouds, at a height of 6,000m (20,000ft) or more in the atmosphere, contain tiny ice crystals that originate from the freezing of water droplets.

Ice crystals usually take a hexagonal form and that’s very important. It guarantees that Moon halos are always the same, no matter what: a faint ring of light 22 degrees away from the Moon.

If the conditions are right, a second ring will appear at 44 degrees, but more often than not, it will just be the arches of this second ring.

Thanks Adam, David, Nicola and Caroline for send in pics.
